Dr. Elizabeth Hairston – McBurrows: Influence In Christian Dance Essay

Dr. Elizabeth Amelia Hairston-McBurrows directed and founded The Liturgical Expressions, Inc. She is very influential in dance especially within dance, especially in the Christian community. A few examples of people who have benefitted from her include world renowned Alvin Ailey and Marian Anderson. In 1965, Dr. Hairston-McBurrows finished a mid-year escalated course of study in the Bachelor’s project at Connecticut College School of Dance in New London, Connecticut, where she mulled over under Martha Graham and Lucas Hoving. She likewise went to Ohio State University where she sought after a graduate studies program in Dance, and additionally the Pacific School of Religion at Berkeley, California[1]. She has been a remarkable contribution to the field of dance and an important Christian dance pioneer.

As a Christian dance pioneer, McBurrows utilizes dance to show the message of the Gospel. As she paints a photo of the delight of cherishing and serving the LORD, and what He needs to do in our lives, she makes a visual expression which is not soon overlooked. Her dance preparing has come fundamentally through considering the bible readings[2].

In addition, she is an alum of Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi where she got a Bachelors of Art Degree in English Literature, with a minor in Speech and Drama. Both a Master of Arts, and a Master of Fine Arts in Christian Education and Drama from the Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio. Furthermore, Apostle Hairston earned a Doctorate of Biblical Studies Degree from International Seminary, Plymouth, Florida. Elizabeth Hairston got from Friends International University a Doctorate of Divinity Degree and a Ph.D. from Friends International University in Merced, California [3].

In 2004, Hairston-McBurrows got a Letter of Recognition as a Global Leader by the President of the United States, George Bush.  She has been recognized for her work especially in her attempts to foster Christian qualities through her ministry work. She was selected Ambassador to the Ivory Coast by the Autorités Consulaires de la Côte d’Ivoire a partner of the President and legislature of the Ivory Coast, West Africa, in September 2007.

Apostle Hairston is Founder of Rose of Sharon School of Liturgical Dance and the Rose of Sharon School of Prophets. She is an individual from Christian International Apostolic Network and the International Coalition of Apostles. She believes in the education of Christians in dance as a means of spreading the gospel. She has also co-authored a book Every Knee Shall Bow: A Literary Treasury for the Advancement of the Arts in Worship which continually strives for the inclusion and use of arts in advancement of arts in Christian worship[4].
